On the home page of our website, you will notice a new ‘ticker’ with numbers scrolling across the screen. If you have wondered what is that all about, you have come to the right place for an explanation of what the fuss is all about and why it matters to current and future customers of SimpliVity.
The SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure product architecture is unique in the market due to the combination of inline deduplication and compression, VM-centric management and native backup and cloning capabilities. Why do these things matter? Because when these capabilities come together, our customers are able to do two things:
- Achieve tremendous savings in storage capacity and IO performance by only writing to disk unique data. Data is deduplicated and compressed inline, at inception, once and forever.
- Improve data protection posture significantly by easily and rapidly creating full backups and clones because only the data that is changed needs to be written to disk.
There are many efficiencies that result from these capabilities – operational efficiency, cost efficiency and data efficiency to name just a few. The ‘ticker’ on the home page is a live reflection of the actual data efficiency experienced by SimpliVity customers.
What is the ticker showing and why does it matter?
Quite simply, data efficiency is the ratio of Logical Storage as seen by the VMs in relation to the actual physical storage capacity used on the SimpliVity OmniStack hyperconverged infrastructure. The scrolling numbers in the ‘True Hyperconvergence Ticker’ show actual data efficiency ratios collected from hundreds of live and active SimpliVity OmniStack deployments in the field. For example, when you see a ratio of 40:1 on the ticker, you are looking at a daily feed of data from a SimpliVity customer who would have needed 40 times the storage they actually use with OmniStack had they been using traditional gear without deduplication and compression.
To the right of the ticker, you see a median efficiency. Half of the individual deployments you see in the ticker enjoy better than this efficiency ratio.
On the top of the ticker, you see the % of customer deployments that are experiencing over 100:1 efficiency. At the time of writing this post, over 20% of our deployments are enjoying >100:1 efficiency. Why do we show this number? Is it just about more storage savings? No. These customers achieve these efficiencies because they are harnessing the native data protection capability fully. They are taking frequent SimpliVity backups to improve Recovery Point Objectives and disaster recovery for their critical applications and using SimpliVity cloning to achieve greater agility in their environments.
Nothing is more fulfilling than to see our product being used exactly how it is intended and to its full extent. Real numbers speak for themselves. We are humbled and by this data and are committed to helping current and future customers achieve such efficiencies.
