Many IT organizations are hindered by siloed data center architectures and legacy data protection solutions that are inherently inefficient and inflexible. St. John’s Riverside Hospital in New York is a perfect example. St. John’s was running a mix of applications including Oracle, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, and Pyxis medication inventory tracker across its fractured IT infrastructure. The hospital also used Citrix XenApp VDI to provide a standard, centrally controlled workspace to thousands of distributed healthcare workers.
St. John’s aging IT systems were running out of capacity and becoming increasingly expensive to maintain and extend. Ensuring high availability and performance for all applications was a challenge. Even worse, the IT team was unable to meet strict data availability and retention service level agreements (SLAs) with their disjointed architecture and dated data protection solutions.
Concerned with the performance, reliability and economics of their legacy IT systems, St. John’s standardized on SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure for its next-generation data center initiative. Designed from the ground up for today’s highly virtualized IT environments, SimpliVity’s hyperconverged infrastructure is the only one of its kind to assimilate all IT below the hypervisor.
Thanks to SimpliVity, St. John’s consolidated its data center footprint from five racks to two racks while significantly increasing availability, capacity and performance for critical applications. The SimpliVity solution enables a mix of workloads including multiple XenApp servers delivering standard desktops to 1,800 healthcare workers. Even better, the hyperconverged infrastructure’s unique real-time data deduplication, compression and optimization technologies help St. John’s contain storage costs and accelerate backup and recovery functions. With SimpliVity, the IT group can now meet its critical RPO and RTO goals for all applications.
Additionally, the St. John’s team can now manage all of their virtualized infrastructure from a single management interface, vCenter, in a VM-centric fashion. Since St. John’s infrastructure is now much easier to manage, the IT team was able to free up resources to focus on more critical initiatives, including the hospital’s mandate to meet the federal government’s requirements for the meaningful use of Electronic Health Records (EHR). By helping St. John’s comply with these requirements, the IT team was able to help secure reimbursement payments from the EHR incentive program.
Are you concerned about the performance, reliability or economics of your existing IT infrastructure? Are you looking to free up time so that IT can focus on more strategic initiatives? SimpliVity’s hyperconverged infrastructure can help you eliminate cost and complexity by consolidating a variety of IT functions—including compute, storage, network switching, replication, and backup—onto virtualized industry-standard x86 hardware.
