SimpliVity had the pleasure of hosting guest speaker Henry Baltazar from Forrester Research on a webinar, “Hyperconverged Infrastructure: The Intersection of IT Evolution and Backup Modernization” last week. In the 45-minute session, SimpliVity and Forrester looked at the typical pain points and drivers in the market fueling changes with data protection, and how SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure is actually addressing backup, and disaster recovery issues.
Forrester analyst Henry Baltazar shared some insights about challenges in the market, including: limited backup windows, data growth, increasing recovery demands, greater complexity, and remote/mobile workers, and the increasing criticality of applications and data. During the session, we polled attendees to understand their most pressing challenges. Not surprisingly, disaster recovery was the number one challenge – by an almost 2:1 margin.
Interestingly, it was revealed that although IT organizations continue to make investments in processes and technology to shorten the amount of time it takes to recover data and perform backups with greater frequency to shorten the time between recovery points, RTOs and RPOs have continued to lengthen.
When we polled webinar attendees regarding their recovery time objectives (RTOs) and recovery point objectives (RPOs), the outcomes underscore the earlier pain points shared. For about two-thirds of the respondents, it takes multiple hours to a full day to recover from a typical outage. And, for another 10%, it takes multiple days to a full week to get applications and data back online. The bright spot is that for one-quarter of responding attendees, recovery is accomplished within an hour.
Regarding RPOs, most webinar attendees that responded fall into a normal range. More than half (60%) are likely performing backups one to a few times per day, affording them recovery of data that’s only a few hours to a full day old. Eleven percent had fewer recovery points that enabled recovery of data that was days to weeks old. For these organizations, that could mean significant risk with data loss. More than one-quarter (28%) of respondents have made investments in technology and processes that allow more frequent copies, enabling minimal data loss.
SimpliVity’s Jesse St. Laurent provided an overview of SimpliVity’s hyperconverged infrastructure and how the solution helps address the data protection challenges identified by the Forrester research. He shared a demonstration of just how easy it is to establish VM-centric policies for automated backup of local and remote site. He also shared some anecdotes regarding how customers have implemented SimpliVity’s native data protection—in many cases displacing incumbent solutions with dramatic improvements in RTOs and the ability to backup data with greater frequency.
