Blundstone, the iconic Australian footwear manufacturer and online retailer, had a problem. While the organization was expanding rapidly globally, their IT systems were aging and not keeping pace.
Just as it was described in The Australian’s recent article, “Simplifying the boots business,” Blundstone’s systems had become inefficient and costly. Tasks such as configuring backup policies were taking weeks using the company’s existing tools. If disaster struck, or if equipment failed, the process of restoring applications could take hours or even days.
Peter Cullen, ICT and Data Hardware Manager for Blundstone, knew that changes had to be made. He wanted to update the company’s data center. He wanted to improve the scalability, reliability, efficiency, and economics of the company’s IT systems. He wanted to move Blundstone into the future and reimagine its infrastructure and operations to be more agile, operationally efficient, and enable time to innovate for his business.
With the help and advice of IT consultant Anderson Morgan, Cullen found the basis for the next-generation data center Blundstone needed in the form of SimpliVity’s OmniCube hyperconverged infrastructure.
SimpliVity’s solution was designed from the ground up to support the virtual datacenter, which allows for companies to realize their full IT potential. The strong foundation, or secret sauce, of SimpliVity’s hyperconverged infrastructure systems is the OmniStack Data Virtualization Platform.
In the case of Blundstone, the footwear manufacturer was able to use SimpliVity’s rock-solid foundational technology to implement a geographically distributed configuration for ultimate data protection; they replaced two racks of legacy HP gear with two 2U SimpliVity OmniCube CN-3000 nodes in their primary data center. They also deployed an OmniCube CN-3000 in a remote location for disaster recovery. All aspects of the distributed 2+1 OmniCube federation are centrally managed by the IT team using VMware vCenter.
Blundstone is now able to protect all their application data on a regular basis. And backups and restores, which used to take hours or even days, are now completed in minutes. Cullen’s decision to modernize Blundstone’s data center also resulted in lower storage costs, resulting in 47:1 data efficiency.
With SimpliVity, Blundstone’s IT team is able to deploy new applications in days, compared to the weeks it took with the legacy solutions.
“With SimpliVity I can quickly institute granular data protection policies at the VM level,” Cullen said. “Deploying new workloads is a snap.”
