When it comes to stress in everyday life, people often remark that, “it’s the little things that matter.” Our company’s mission is to “Simplify IT,” so we feel it’s important to pay attention to the little things. IT infrastructure is complex, so it’s no small order to simplify the whole thing. SimpliVity focuses on making the manageability and support of our hyperconverged platform as simple as possible so our customers can simplify their lives.
The process of simplifying IT starts by simplifying the deployment. We created our Deployment Manager to automatically discover SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure nodes on the network, load the proper hypervisor, and configure it based on a pre-created template. Part of this process is adding the nodes into the native hypervisor management tool (think VMware vCenter). This simple step provides each node awareness of the other nodes in the same data center, awareness of other data centers, and awareness of the topology between any data centers. There is no need to configure each node with the IP addresses of other nodes – locally or globally – and no need to modify configurations when a node or site is added or removed.
When configuring data protection, SimpliVity customers automatically benefit from disk and node level protection from inception, meaning there are no settings to define. All the customers need to define are the backup policies: how often to backup, where to backup to, and how long to retain each point in time. These policies only need to be created once and they automatically exist across all data centers in a global SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure – what we call a Federation. They are applied at the VM level, but can be identified at the datastore level to provide a default policy to any new VMs.
When the unavoidable occurs, SimpliVity still wants to simplify our customers’ lives. First off, our customer support team is ready to help customers with any related issues they may have even if it doesn’t initially look like a SimpliVity problem. We want the support experience to be as easy as possible, so we recently introduced additional support choices and features. One of these additional features is our improved phone home offering, OmniWatch, for reporting problems and related support data, so tickets can be opened automatically with all the relevant data needed. With the newly announced OmniView product, customers can have easy access to I/O charts at the data center and VM level that provide deep information about the performance of the system, and make it easy to discover the top VMs contributing to workload spikes.
To further maximize the convenience of the SimpliVity experience, all of these functions are integrated into the native hypervisor management tools and orchestration and automation platforms, like Cisco’s UCS Director and VMware’s vRealize Automation. This way, customers don’t need to load another interface or switch their focus away from the work they’re already doing. An administrator working on deploying a VM can simply right click another VM in the inventory to execute a one-time manual backup. Better yet, they can make everyone’s life simpler and expose the manual backup functionality through vRealize Automation or UCS Director so the administrator of that VM can execute the backup on their own.
Repetitive tasks are generally time consuming, so the most successful administrators are those who automate these tasks. SimpliVity allows access to our CLI to automate many tasks. For those who’d prefer to use APIs, we already have APIs that expose the same set of commands found in the CLI through XML interface calls. We’ve also introduced REST APIs to provide even easier access to SimpliVity operations through a script or an existing orchestration or automation platform.
All of these are little things that SimpliVity can do, but when delivered together in a single device, they add up to a significant reduction in effort needed to maintain a robust data center. Add to this one really big element of simplification: natively providing the capabilities of eight -12 legacy data center devices, and SimpliVity can eliminate the integration complexities, hardware maintenance, software maintenance, management interface training, and vendor management of these different components.
See how you can simplify your life, so you can feel free to work on that long overdue Windows upgrade project, or the investigation of a new network monitoring application, or head out to that upcoming user group meeting, or simply take some well deserved time off.
