“The SimpliVity product performs exactly as advertised, which is all I can ask for and extremely unusual in IT. With SimpliVity we can configure virtual compute and storage resources, quickly and easily, to respond to the needs of the business in a timely manner.”
– Chris Frank, Manager of ITS Operations and Support, GoodLife Fitness
GoodLife Fitness, the largest health club chain in Canada, replaced its remotely hosted and managed data center with SimpliVity’s OmniStack Integrated Solution with Lenovo System x. The SimpliVity solution accelerates IT agility and ensures high performance and availability for the company’s business-critical applications, while significantly reducing ongoing operations expenses.
Business Challenge: Increase IT Agility and Performance, Reduce OPEX
GoodLife Fitness’ outsourced IT implementation was inherently costly and inefficient to operate. “We were at the mercy of our managed service provider,” recalls Chris Frank, Manager of ITS Operations and Support, for GoodLife Fitness. “They charged high monthly fees and imposed a three-week lead time for adds, moves, and changes.”
With the company relocating to a new corporate headquarters, Frank thought the time was right to bring IT operations in-house. After investigating a number of potential options, including traditional compute and storage solutions from IBM and Dell, Frank selected SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure for the company’s new data center. SimpliVity’s VM-centric management capabilities played a major role in the decision. “The SimpliVity solution is extremely easy to administer,” explains Frank. “IT generalists can provision, clone and restore VMs in seconds, directly from vCenter. If we were going to operate our own data center, simplicity was critically important.”
SimpliVity provides a scalable, modular building block of x86 resources that delivers all the functionality of traditional IT infrastructure in a single device, with a unified administrative interface. GoodLife deployed two SimpliVity nodes in its new data center in London, Ontario. A redundant configuration ensures continuous availability in the event of equipment failures, while an additional SimpliVity node in a remote colocation facility provides offsite disaster recovery.
The SimpliVity solution accelerates business agility and safeguards the company’s critical applications and core IT services. “The SimpliVity product performs exactly as advertised, which is all I can ask for and extremely unusual in IT,” says Frank. With SimpliVity we can configure virtual compute and storage resources, quickly and easily, to respond to the needs of the business in a timely manner.” The IT team can now implement changes in minutes instead of weeks.
SimpliVity’s inherent data efficiencies and data protection capabilities optimize storage resources and accelerate data backup and recovery functions. In the London data center 36.5 TB of logical data consumes only 2 TB of physical storage. Better still, the operations team can back up, move and restore VMs across sites in just seconds for rapid disaster recovery and business continuity.
Thanks to SimpliVity, GoodLife Fitness now enjoys a state-of-the-art IT implementation that delivers outstanding performance, reliability and economics. “By eliminating our monthly managed hosting fees, we expect to get a quick payback on our investment and reduce our TCO over the long run,” explains Frank.
