Municipality of Båstad Sweden
The SimpliVity solution is reliable and very easy to manage. OmniCube helps us ensure continuous IT service availability while significantly reducing ongoing operations expenses.
– Robert Zackrisson, IT Operations Manager, Båstads Kommun
The municipality of Båstad is a seaside town in southern Sweden, best known for hosting the annual Swedish Open tennis tournament. The town took advantage of a federal government disaster preparedness program to upgrade its outdated IT infrastructure. The municipality replaced its legacy IT systems with a high-availability Simplivity OmniCube implementation distributed across two sites. The SimpliVity solution ensures continuous IT service availability in the event of catastrophes or equipment failures and reduces total cost of ownership.
BUSINESS CHALLENGE: Business Continuity and DR
With a staff of eight, the municipality of Båstad Information Technology organization provides IT services for local government employees and operates the town’s website. The municipality’s legacy IT infrastructure included HP ProLiant servers and a mix of HP EVA and IBM Storwize v7000 SAN storage systems—all deployed in a single data center. An unusual event such as an extended power outage or a major catastrophe such as a flood or a fire had the potential to disrupt critical IT services and take down the municipality’s website. The town planned to exploit a government disaster preparedness initiative to upgrade its aging IT systems.
Robert Zackrisson, IT Operations Manager for the municipality, issued an RFP for a next-generation data center with inherent business continuity and disaster recovery capabilities. After an extensive review process involving a number of vendors including DellTM and NetApp®, Zackrisson selected SimpliVity OmniCube hyperconverged infrastructure systems for its next-generation data center architecture.
“The SimpliVity solution stood far ahead of the competition,” said Zackrisson. “The other vendors didn’t offer fully converged solutions and couldn’t match OmniCube’s data storage and protection efficiencies. And the ability to manage the entire hyperconverged infrastructure from VMware vCenter was a real differentiator. We had a limited time window to take advantage of government funding and were able cutover to SimpliVity and decommission the legacy systems in just two days.”
SimpliVity OmniCube eliminates infrastructure cost and complexity by consolidating a variety of IT functions—including compute, storage, network switching, replication, and backup—onto virtualized, industry-standard x86 hardware. The town replaced 24 rack-units of legacy equipment with two 2U OmniCube CN-2000 systems. The OmniCube systems are deployed in separate locations in a high availability stretched cluster configuration to ensure continuous service in the event of equipment failures or disasters. The IT group centrally manages the distributed configuration using VMware vCenter. With the radically simplified infrastructure, the group no longer has to rely on outside consultants for ongoing support and maintenance assistance.
OmniCube’s innovative real-time deduplication, compression and optimization technologies deliver breakthrough performance and data efficiency. The solution minimizes data backup and recovery traffic and accelerates data protection functions. “It was taking about seven hours to backup 100+ virtual machines using Veeam®,” said Zackrisson. “But with SimpliVity’s data efficiencies we can backup our entire environment in seconds. In the near future we plan to install another OmniCube in the neighboring community of Ängelholm to provide an added level of assurance.”
