One Source Networks
SimpliVity provides a unique platform for OSN, enabling us to rapidly turn up new services with minimal impact on operations, at minimal cost.”
– Michael McKinnon, Director of Information Systems One Source Networks
One Source Networks (OSN) is a leading provider of innovative voice and Unified Communications services and Managed Network Services for the Fortune 1000. The company backs all its offerings with one contract, account team and invoice, providing the peace of mind and simplicity of working with a single provider.
OSN was looking for a solution to power its new Microsoft Lync offering: Cloud Lync Enterprise. OSN standardized on SimpliVity to host core components of its new virtual Cloud Lync Enterprise solution running Microsoft applications, including Lync 2013.
Optimized Infrastructure, Built-in Availability, Scalability, and Simplified Management
OSN had been developing multiple new services to meet the evolving needs of its global enterprise customers. When the OSN innovation architects were tasked with rolling out the company’s new Cloud Lync Enterprise offering they decided to broaden their scope beyond traditional servers, SAN and storage architectures. The new infrastructure had to be world-class to support the robust Cloud Lync Enterprise service, while delivering operational improvements.
OSN’s Cloud Lync Enterprise is a fully-managed, dedicated offering that provides organizations with the feature functionality and security of a premises-based Lync environment, with the global scale and cost efficiency of a hosted service. Users can easily and reliably collaborate across locations and devices with diverse tools, including IM, presence, videoconferencing and full PSTN connectivity. The service provides full Enterprise Voice functionality and is delivered over OSN’s redundant global voice network. Cloud Lync Enterprise is backed by stringent SLAs and offers a dedicated, private environment for each organization to ensure protection of critical communications.
McKinnon attended VMware’s 2014, saw a demo of SimpliVity’s OmniCube, and realized the power and innovation of SimpliVity’s solution. He had found a single solution that provides all IT infrastructure below the hypervisor to run core business applications, making any application highly available and providing data protection on a global scale across multiple sites. The unique design can scale-out in small, 2U increments to a very large scale, and the entire solution is managed from a single interface, globally.
After a thorough pilot, OSN deployed sixteen OmniCube CN-3000 systems in a Federation comprised of clustered pairs in Dallas, Chicago, LA, NY, London, Hong Kong and Bogota, with future sites to include Amsterdam and Sydney. The company has also deployed systems in a DevOps, Test/Dev lab in its Austin headquarters.
Each Point-of-Presence (PoP) is now benefiting from increased compute and storage capacity, optimized performance, improved availability with faster backup/restore and cloning times, and new levels of agility. Each modular 2U OmniCube is simple to ship and deploy throughout OSN’s global network. Previous provisioning operations for “carving LUNs,” building SAN-storage, allocating servers, staging storage for VMware, generating backup/restore methods were also eliminated. SimpliVity delivers all the requisite services in one solution, below the hypervisor, to deploy Cloud Lync Enterprise instances running Microsoft Lync 2013, as well as other critical VM applications. SimpliVity enables rapid service delivery on a flexible, modular building block that includes rapid cloning and Disaster Recovery capabilities. The OSN Engineering team also benefits from operational efficiency with the ability to provide global unified management from VMware vCenter for all SimpliVity management. Nothing could be simpler.
After virtualizing on OmniCube, OSN reduced required rack space in its distributed PoPs from multiple racks to half a rack with two OmniCubes at each PoP. If more processing or resources are required, OSN can easily deploy a new, modular SimpliVity system. SimpliVity’s hyperconverged offering gives McKinnon and the rest of his operations team peace of mind, with all tasks now managed through a single vCenter interface.
“If you know how to use vCenter, you’re in it and you’re done. That complexity is all gone,” said McKinnon. “We’ve also experienced an increase in speed and a lot of that is because redundant application IOs are eliminated with SimpliVity.”
OSN also benefited from OmniCube’s data efficiency capabilities that greatly reduced the time necessary for cloning, replication, and backups. RPOs/RTOs now only take minutes, and OSN has experienced performance optimization when testing the new Microsoft-powered Cloud Lync Enterprise service. OSN witnessed OmniCube’s native inline deduplication, compression, and optimization that accelerates IO across all VMs, including Microsoft Lync 2013, running on the SimpliVity global Federation. Now that all VMs are running on SimpliVity, OSN is able to efficiently deploy Microsoft Lync 2013 globally.
“The OmniCube opens up a whole different world of capabilities for OSN and our customers,” said McKinnon.
