Record Automatische Deuren
“SimpliVity eliminates IT cost and complexity and helps us keep our critical business systems up and running. We consolidated two racks of Oracle, HP and Dell equipment into two SimpliVity nodes. And we can now backup and recover our applications and data almost instantaneously.”
– Hans Wijnstekers, Managing Director, Record Automatische Deuren
Record Automatische Deuren, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of automatic door systems, replaced its disjointed multivendor IT environment with SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure running on Lenovo System x servers. The SimpliVity solution helps Record simplify operations, save money and ensure high performance and availability for its core IT services and business applications.
Business Challenge: Infrastructure Consolidation and Modernization
Record was constrained by a fragmented multivendor IT environment resulting from a corporate acquisition. The manufacturer’s original IT infrastructure included Oracle servers, storage arrays, hypervisor and backup solutions. The newly acquired company’s IT environment included HP servers, DellTM EqualLogicTM storage, Microsoft® Hyper-V® and SymantecTM backup solutions.
The combined IT implementation—with multiple vendors, technology platforms and administrative interfaces—was far too complex and costly. In addition, the company’s legacy data protection solutions were inherently inefficient. It took hours to backup or recover critical applications using the Oracle Secure Backup or Symantec Backup Exec solutions, exposing the manufacturer to excessive data loss and prolonged application downtime.
Upon the advice of their trusted IT adviser Rhodix IT Services, Record deployed SimpliVity OmniStack Solution with Lenovo System x3650 to consolidate and unify their IT systems. The SimpliVity solution streamlines operations and improves the performance and availability of their business-critical applications and data. Rhodix implemented the SimpliVity solution and remotely administers and manages the system on Record’s behalf.
SimpliVity OmniStack provides a scalable, modular, 2U building block of x86 resources that offers all the functionality of traditional IT infrastructure—including hypervisor, server, storage, and data protection functions—in a single device, with a unified administrative interface. Record replaced two racks of legacy equipment—one in each data center—with just two 2U OmniStack with Lenovo System x3650 M5 nodes. The redundant OmniStack configuration ensures continuous availability in the event of hardware failures or application mishaps.
The SimpliVity solution reduces CAPEX and OPEX, and improves IT service agility and reliability. SimpliVity’s global unified management capabilities and VM-centric user interface dramatically simplify operations. Remote Rhodix administrators can provision VMs and spin up IT services with just two or three mouse clicks from VMware vCenter. “The unified management features were one of the primary reasons we recommended SimpliVity,” says Ben Wisman, Team Leader Operations & Project Manager, Rhodix IT Services. “Our support staff can remotely administer the SimpliVity system quickly and easily. The solution helps us improve customer satisfaction and it frees up resources to focus on other business tasks and support issues.”
OmniStack’s built-in data protection features help safeguard Record’s critical IT applications and services. The product’s unique data efficiencies have slashed data backup and recovery times from hours to just seconds, and data is now backed up hourly instead of nightly. “When Record was hit by a ransomware attack we were able to restore the impacted applications in a matter of minutes with minimal data loss,” explains Wisman. “With the previous implementation it would have taken hours to restore services, and a day’s worth of data may have been lost in the process.”
Key Benefits include:
- Improved RTOs — critical applications and data restored in seconds or minutes compared to hours
- Improved RPOs — hourly backups instead of nightly backups
- Lower storage costs — 86:1 data efficiency
- Appreciable OPEX and space savings — two full equipment racks consolidated into two 2U nodes
- Improved IT agility and reliability — remote Rhodix support team efficiently administers and manages the deployment
