Special District Risk Management Authority (SDRMA)
“Being in the insurance business, long term data retention is a major concern,” said Frank Ono, President of The iFish Group. “When we looked at other technologies, there was a massive storage penalty to pay for keeping data long term. With Simplivity, long term data retention is virtually a non-issue. In addition to the performance benefits, cost savings, ease of use, and data protection are the major reason we chose Simplivity.”
– Frank Ono, President of The iFish Group
The Special District Risk Management Authority (SDRMA) is a public entity risk management pool that serves more than 700 members in California from a range of government agencies. The organization provides property, liability, workers’ compensation and health benefits coverages.
Trying SimpliVity Hyperconvergence
The Special District Risk Management Authority (SDRMA) is a 30-year-old organization providing coverage protection through risk management solutions to public agencies in California. The SDRMA partners with iFish Group, an IT consulting and custom development firm, for its managed hosting services.
The IT team behind SDRMA was familiar with converged infrastructure before they found SimpliVity. They had been using Nutanix technology, but ran out of storage and could only expand by adding new nodes, which was frustrating to the IT team. The storage utilization challenge had stumped SDRMA until they found SimpliVity. After vetting the platform’s disaster recovery, backup, and deduplication features, SDRMA and iFish Group chose SimpliVity’s hyperconvergence solution.
Deployment was very quick and finished in about a week—much less than the month that was budgeted. SDRMA started with migrating non-critical workloads to its OmniCubes, then Active Directory, and worked with SimpliVity support on resolving a few configuration issues.
SDRMA implemented three SimpliVity OmniCubes. They deployed two OmniCubes in their main data center and one in a remote data center about 20 miles away. The remote site had been up and running for the past few years, but the SimpliVity technology has now optimized the data transmitted over the WAN and resulted in reduced backup windows and increased data transfer performance to their remote data center. Overall, SDRMA has seen a substantial increase in storage capacity with SimpliVity’s built-in, inline data deduplication. There’s much more room for growth, as SDRMA is getting much better storage utilization than they did with Nutanix.
Prepared for Anything
In just the first week of running SimpliVity, the SDRMA IT team saw its new backup capabilities in action when a user inadvertently deleted an entire directory. It took only minutes to get it back up and running, since backup windows are now much smaller. SDRMA previously backed up its servers once a day with a 30 day retention period, but now is able to take backups every 15 minutes with a retention period of 10 years for specified data.
SDRMA had previously been using Zerto for replication and CommVault for backups, running on top of Nutanix. By choosing SimpliVity, not only was the cost was less, but also the complexity of having to use multiple vendor tools to manage the storage, replication, backup and recovery, and DR processes that SDRMA needed. Since implementing SimpliVity, they’ve seen well in excess of 40:1 data efficiency ratios, compared with 2.8:1 using compression or deduplication with the old Nutanix system.
SimpliVity provided SDRMA with a solid scale out architecture should they need to further expand their infrastructure. The solution allows them to easily add individual nodes as their storage or compute needs grow and will continue to provide an effective return on their investment. Choosing SimpliVity has helped them to reduce the overall cost of ownership and operational risks associated with a multi-vendor solution.
