“SimpliVity’s built-in data protection, dedupe and compression capabilities were impressive, as was the overall simplicity of the solution. Nutanix would
have required as many as five nodes, compared to two with SimpliVity.”
– Phil Vlach, Director of ICT, Surrey Place Centre
Surrey Place Centre, a specialized clinical services provider for individuals living with developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder and those with visual impairments, replaced its siloed multivendor IT implementaSlidetion with SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure. The SimpliVity solution accelerates data backup and disaster recovery while eliminating infrastructure cost and complexity.
Business Challenge: Improve
Surrey Place Centre’s fractured IT environment—a combination of HP and Dell servers and Dell storage arrays— was costly and complicated to administer and maintain. To make matters worse, the organization relied on an outdated tape-based backup solution for offsite disaster recovery. Catastrophes had the potential to disrupt critical business applications for days or even weeks while systems were recovered.
After considering a number of alternatives including solutions from Nutanix and EMC, Phil Vlach, Director of ICT for Surrey Place Centre, recommended SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure for the organization’s next-generation IT implementation. “SimpliVity’s built-in data protection, dedupe and compression capabilities were impressive, as was the overall simplicity of the solution,” recalls Vlach. ”Nutanix would have required as many as five nodes, compared to two with SimpliVity.”
SimpliVity provides a scalable, modular building block of x86 resources that delivers all the functionality of traditional IT infrastructure—including hypervisor, compute, storage, and data protection functions—in a single device, with a unified administrative interface. Surrey Place Centre deployed two 2U SimpliVity OmniStack with Cisco UCS nodes in its primary data center, replacing a half rack of legacy equipment.
A redundant configuration ensures continuous availability in the event of hardware failures. A third SimpliVity node in a new remote colocation facility provides swift disaster recovery.
SimpliVity’s efficient data protection capabilities enable rapid backup and restoration within and between data centers. “With our old system we were doing nightly
local backups and relying on tape for disaster recovery,” explains Vlach. “With SimpliVity we do local and remote backups hourly, every four hours, daily or weekly, depending on the criticality of the application. In the event of a disaster we can recover in minutes compared to hours or days with our old system.”
SimpliVity’s VM-centric management dramatically simplifies operations, freeing up IT staff to work on more strategic activities. “SimpliVity’s single-pane-of-glass management was a big selling point,” says Vlach. “We can administer everything from vCenter—quickly and easily.”
Thanks to SimpliVity, Surrey Place Centre now takes full advantage of an ultra-efficient IT implementation that delivers superior reliability, business agility and economics.
