SwiftecIT joins the trend of service providers and VARs who deploy SimpliVity’s OmniCube to offer cloud services to customers
Like many service providers who offer cloud services to their enterprise customers, SwiftecIT realized that addressing the growing demand among local business for its cloud services, while also competing effectively with the giant cloud service providers, required a new technology. Integrating and managing the scatter of numerous products in order to deliver cloud services using traditional infrastructure required a lot of capital and an army of IT technicians. Following an extensive evaluation of OmniCube, SimpliVity’s globally federated and hyperconverged infrastructure building block, SwiftecIT acted “swiftly.” It first deployed an OmniCube Federation as the platform for its internally used private cloud. Once deemed successful, Swiftec launched its public cloud offering with OmniCube as
BUSINESS CHALLENGE: Technology Refresh, Scalability, and Simplicity of Management
While the cloud practice was nascent, the traditional business was still booming at SwiftecIT, putting pressure on the entire organization. They needed to manage more customers, an increasing number of internal applications, and—with the cloud services getting off the ground—more hosting servers. Since it could no longer provide the speed, flexibility, backup, high availability, and data recovery functionality that the company and its clients required, the legacy infrastructure had become an impediment to growth.
Adam Winter, President of SwiftecIT, decided it was time for a major change. “The old way of managing infrastructure just wasn’t working for us. We needed to simplify our environment in order to keep up with—and further fuel—the growth of the business.”
As an early adopter of VMware, SwiftecIT was well aware of the impact it was having on their customers, allowing them to adapt to rapidly changing business conditions. Winter also recognized the other market trend that was increasing daily: SME customers were rapidly moving portions, or all, of their infrastructure to cloud service providers. SwiftecIT responded to this opportunity by creating a plan to transform infrastructure to enable a superior private cloud offering.
In addition to improving their backup, HA, and DR capabilities, the team at SwiftecIT identified three additional criteria that had to be met when replacing their
- Lower TCO
- Ability to scale incrementally as the business grows
- Simple to use
SwiftecIT leveraged the SimpliVity OmniCube technology to deploy a private cloud. The SwiftecIT private cloud hosts all of their internal infrastructure as well as critical customer VMs. This allows the SwiftecIT team to run a single infrastructure to protect all of their systems, which has reduced the training required and the ramp-up time
for new team members.
“We migrated virtual machines onto the OmniCube systems the first day and they were protected on our DR systems the same day.”
After their internal success, SwiftecIT began recommending the OmniCube to their customers. “The complete functionality and simplicity of OmniCube allows us to offer our customers high-end functionality at a price point they can afford.”
SwiftecIT has proven the value and benefits of operating a SimpliVity OmniCube Federation in its IT environment as the infrastructure solution for both its internal private cloud and its cloud services offering to its clients. Now operating four OmniCube systems in two separate locations, the team is supporting all of their internal systems and has migrated their first wave of customers as well. The future holds great promise as SwiftecIT can continue to leverage OmniCube’s scale-out functionality to expand the dynamic pool of shared resources that back-ends its private cloud offering.
Key benefits recognized by SwiftecIT after partnering with SimpliVity:
- Improved Level of Service to SwiftecIT Customers:
RTOs and RPOs have improved dramatically since deploying OmniCube, as SwiftecIT leverages the native VM-level backup functionality to take frequent backups of all customer VMs. For example, a customer hosting their Microsoft Exchange environment in the SwiftecIT private cloud made an error during an Exchange upgrade and called the SwiftecIT support team for help. “Our support team restored the VM to backup taken a few minutes earlier and the entire call took 2 minutes.”
- Simplicity of Management:
The entire technical team at SwiftecIT was trained to manage the OmniCube Federation through vCenter in less than 30 minutes.
- Peace of Mind:
“I sleep better at night knowing that our customers’ VMs are fully protected around the clock,” said Mr. Winter.
- Reduced Bandwidth Utilization:
The global deduplication, compression, and optimization technology in the SimpliVity OmniCube dramatically reduces the required WAN bandwidth to provide DR services.
The project has been an incredible success for SwiftecIT, according to Winter. The team successfully updated their legacy infrastructure with the most advanced hyperconverged platform in the industry.
“We run our internal infrastructure on the same private cloud platform that we offer to our customers. Managing a single infrastructure has improved our ability to respond quickly to both customer and internal requirements, and has been a significant catalyst for our growth.”
