T-Systems, part of Deutsche Telekom and one of the largest service providers in the world, chooses SimpliVity’s OmniCube as the platform for scalable public/private cloud infrastructure that spans multiple data centers and delivers new cloud economics.
Leveraging OmniCube’s globally federated unified management, T-Systems achieves high-end performance, availability, and data protection with a flexible, scalable infrastructure that delivers massive annual cost savings
T-Systems Czech Republic, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom Group, is a technology pioneer and one of the first organizations in Europe to recognize the value of cloud computing. T-Systems is one of the largest telecommunications companies in the Czech Republic, and has been leveraging its expertise in a utility model to deliver computing services and data storage capacity for its customers. Given the importance of uptime and data protection, T-Systems built its original cloud infrastructure using high-end SAN arrays, and has been managing double-digit growth in infrastructure and associated costs for several years.
Recently, however, Jan Drbohlav, Delivery Vice President of T-Systems Czech Republic assembled the executive team responsible for IT services to address the need for a change. Continuing on the current path of purchasing millions of dollars in high-end infrastructure gear annually was untenable, and would prevent them from delivering the continued innovation and services that their customers expect.
A thorough analysis of infrastructure alternatives led them to OmniCube, SimpliVity’s globally federated and hyperconverged cloud infrastructure building block. Through a project led by IT consultancy SIT—a SimpliVity partner—T-Systems has deployed its next-generation cloud infrastructure with OmniCube across three data centers, enabling them to maintain all of the same levels of performance, data protection, and uptime while dramatically reducing the TCO of the cloud infrastructure. With OmniCube now at the heart of the infrastructure, T-systems has deployed the flexible, dynamic pool of shared resources that will allow it to scale out as needed while achieving millions of dollars in cost savings annually.
BUSINESS CHALLENGE: TCO Savings, Technology Refresh, and Data Protection
Given that the company primarily addresses enterprise customers, including multinational corporations, the T-Systems IT team has always been chartered with delivering the highest levels of application uptime, performance, and data protection. Hence, historically, all of T-System’s IT infrastructure has been based on high-end SAN disk arrays across three corporate data centers. T-System’s great challenge in seeking to replace its existing infrastructure was continuing to deliver the level of services that its customers demanded, while significantly lowering TCO—all while achieving a simplified DR solution among the three data centers. Any solution would have to fit seamlessly in the VMware environment.
T-Systems decided that any replacement solution must include these key features:
- Achieve current levels of performance
- Achieve current or better High Availability and Data Security
- Inline deduplication and compression
- Onsite and Remote Data Protection Strategies
- Tight VMware Integration
Globally Federated Public/Private Cloud building block
During their research phase, T-Systems weighed OmniCube’s hyperconverged architecture against solutions from industry veterans as well as other emerging technology vendors in the space. T-Systems quickly recognized the tremendous potential of OmniCube to allow them to build a flexible, dynamic, and scalable cloud infrastructure that could span all three data centers while achieving all objectives for availability, performance, and DR. With SimpliVity’s mode of inline deduplication and compression, T-Systems could ensure efficient utilization of data capacity and minimize the need for repeated storage of duplicate information. Since SimpliVity’s built-in data protection suite includes local and remote VM-level backups optimized for WAN bandwidth, entire data sets can be replicated to multiple data centers at any time, without the need for high throughput connections.
Given the clear advantages, T-Systems moved forward to deploy a Federation of OmniCube systems across its 3 data centers in an extended pilot to validate performance, ease of use, flexibility, reliability, DR functionality, and TCO. When it came time to make a decision, OmniCube’s all-in-one hyperconverged approach, offering real-time inline deduplication and compression, a single pane of glass for managing their multiple locations, and an IO stream optimized for highly randomized workloads, made SimpliVity the clear choice.
T-Systems decided to deploy its scale-out cloud infrastructure based on OmniCube in three data centers, with aggressive growth plans.
SimpliVity’s OmniCube now is the foundation for T-Systems public and private cloud, which serves not only internal customers but also delivers the public cloud services offering via secure T-System data centers in the Czech Republic and Europe. OmniCube has helped guarantee high performance, high availability, and data security, giving T-Systems and Deutsche Telekom Group a competitive edge in their respective markets.
Benefits of T-Systems OmniCube Deployment include:
- Timely Delivery of all SLAs for performance, availability, and data protection while optimizing TCO
The T-Systems team knew that to be successful all current commitments to its customers had to be maintained or exceeded. OmniCube quickly proved itself to perform well under significant IO workloads, while delivering availability, and data protection that enterprises expect.
- Data Reduction
Native inline deduplication and compression provides T-Systems with ongoing cost savings through reduced capacity requirements.
- Converged Infrastructure
With SimpliVity’s OmniCube, T-Systems realizes in one device the benefits of multiple technologies that until very recently could only be supplied by separate products, including: inline deduplication and compression, integrated local backup and disaster recovery, WAN optimization, solid state IO optimization—thus allowing T-Systems to maintain its high rate of growth of cloud offerings while delivering radical cost savings annually.
- Ease of Deployment and Management
The value of reductions in time and training delivered by SimpliVity’s “out-of-box” experience has been remarkable, as the team essentially deployed a fully functional data center in a single day. As the team looks to grow the infrastructure, the simplicity of deployment and management will be a major driver of continued cost savings.
“Our primary objective is to continually increase the value that our customers gain from our services. The implementation of the OmniCube technology is the next step that will allow us to cement our place as market leader in public and private cloud services,” explains Mr. Drbohlav.
“This technology is suitable for all users who wish to optimize their IT infrastructure while dealing with high demands on performance, data volume, and secure storage in remote data centers. It distinguishes itself by its easy operation, especially as no additional components need to be integrated,” explains SIT Managing Director Radek Soušek.
