Tulare Joint Union High School District
“SimpliVity improved our performance, reliability and data protection. It is probably the best purchase I’ve made as Director of Technology.”
– Donny Trimm, Director of Technology, Tulare Joint Union High School District
Tulare Joint Union High School District replaced its multivendor IT implementation with SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure. The SimpliVity solution accelerates data backup and recovery while eliminating IT cost and complexity.
Business Challenge: Modernize IT Infrastructure and Improve Data Protection
Tulare’s fractured IT environment—a mix of IBM servers and capacity-constrained EMC storage arrays—was becoming increasingly risky and costly to operate and scale. The IT organization relied on an outdated tape-based backup solution that was slow and inefficient. Equipment failures or disasters had the potential to disrupt IT services for hours while servers were rebuilt and data restored. And to make matters worse, critical data could be lost in the process as backups were only performed weekly.
Donny Trimm, Director of Technology, decided the time was right to refresh the school’s IT systems. After evaluating a number of potential solutions including Nutanix, Trimm selected SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure for the District’s next-generation IT implementation. “SimpliVity’s built-in data protection, dedupe and compression features were a big selling point,” explains Trimm. “With SimpliVity we’ve cut our backup times from 60 hours to about a minute. And we can now retain backups for 18 months.”
SimpliVity provides a scalable, modular building block of x86 resources that delivers all the functionality of traditional IT infrastructure—including hypervisor, compute, storage and data protection—in a single device, with a unified administrative interface. The District deployed three 2U SimpliVity nodes in its main data center and a fourth SimpliVity node at a disaster recovery site.
SimpliVity’s efficient data protection capabilities enable rapid backup and recovery within and between data centers. “With our old system we were doing weekly backups, and we were only backing up data, not servers. If a server crashed we had to rebuild it from scratch.” explains Trimm. “With SimpliVity we back up all our servers and data—locally and remotely— every night. And it takes only minutes to back up or recover a VM and all its data.”
SimpliVity’s data efficiencies also help the District conserve storage capacity and save money. “We kept expanding the expensive EMC SAN to support data growth. We were up to 22 TB and just about maxed out.” recalls Trimm. “With SimpliVity we’re using just 9.8 TB of storage and we still have plenty of capacity left for growth.”
“SimpliVity improved our performance, reliability and data protection,” says Trimm. “It is probably the best purchase I’ve made as the Director of Technology.”
