“The SimpliVity solution is incredibly easy to administer. I manage all three sites singlehandedly. It takes very little time and effort. The system pretty much runs itself.”
– Matthew Wells, IT Manager, Vale Australia
Vale Australia, a leading natural resources and mining company, replaced its multitenant cloud-based with a private cloud based on SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure. The SimpliVity solution delivers the simplicity and agility of a public cloud service while reducing OPEX by 33%.
Business Challenge: Reduce IT Cost and Complexity and Improve Remote Site Data Protection
Like many enterprises, Vale Australia is continuously seeking creative ways to reduce IT cost and complexity in an increasingly competitive business climate. Several years ago the company deployed a popular public cloud service to streamline IT operations across its three distant sites, but the solution proved fairly costly. “The biggest expenses for us were the connectivity to the cloud and the cloud itself,” explains Matthew Wells, IT Manager for Vale Australia. “Plus we were still running file services and print services locally, and using Veeam for data protection, which was complex and time-consuming.”
Wells thought he could save money in the long run by implementing a private cloud. After investigating a number of potential options, he selected SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure for the company’s private cloud initiative. SimpliVity’s built-in data protection and global unified management capabilities played a pivotal role in the decision. “The SimpliVity solution is incredibly easy to administer. I manage all three sites singlehandedly. It takes very little time and effort. The system pretty much runs itself,” explains Wells.
SimpliVity provides a scalable, modular building block of x86 resources that delivers all the functionality of traditional IT infrastructure in a single device, with a unified administrative interface. Vale deployed two SimpliVity nodes in its Perth facility and additional SimpliVity nodes at remote locations in Brisbane and Central Queensland. Wells manages the entire geographically distributed operation—quickly and easily—by himself.
The SimpliVity solution provides cloud scalability, agility and simplicity while significantly reducing TCO and risk. “SimpliVity is far more affordable than the public cloud option,” explains Wells. “When you factor in the cost of the cloud service, the connectivity and the backup infrastructure the SimpliVity solution reduces our OPEX by about a third. We expect a ROI of about six months.”
SimpliVity’s inherent data efficiencies and data protection capabilities help Vale optimize storage capacity and accelerate data backup and recovery functions. In the Perth data center over 1 PB of logical data, including 626 full VM backups, consumes less than 20 TB of physical storage. “We have a 6 TB file server in Brisbane and a 4 TB file server in Central Queensland,” says Wells. We back them up daily over the WAN in just minutes.” And data recovery is just as impressive. “We can restore a PB of data in about three hours—without impacting the performance of production applications.”
