Worth & Company
“The SimpliVity solution has proven to be a great money and time saver for our IT infrastructure. There is nothing hotter in the market currently!”
– Woody Muth, CIO, Worth & Company
Worth & Company, a full-service mechanical contractor, replaced its aging multivendor IT implementation with SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure. The SimpliVity solution helps the firm ensure high performance and reliability for its business-critical applications and data, while eliminating IT expense and complexity.
Business Challange: Infrastructure Modernization and Disaster Recovery
Worth & Company’s legacy IT infrastructure was becoming increasingly inefficient, risky and costly to maintain and scale. The company’s fractured IT environment included stand-alone HP rack servers, Buffalo external NAS systems and Barracuda data backup appliances.
Implementing new applications or expanding capacity meant individually procuring and provisioning physical servers, NAS devices and backup appliances—a complex, expensive and lengthy proposition that impaired business agility. Administering systems and troubleshooting problems was a time consuming, error-prone process involving multiple devices and management interfaces.
Woody Muth, CIO for Worth & Company, initiated a data center modernization program to improve the agility, performance and economics of the company’s IT infrastructure. After evaluating a number of options, Muth selected SimpliVity OmniCube hyperconverged infrastructure as the foundation for the company’s next-generation data center.
“SimpliVity provides everything we need including virtual compute, storage and data protection, in a compact, easy-to-manage platform,” says Muth. “OmniCube was considerably less expensive and significantly easier to administer than the other solutions we evaluated. The product’s built-in data protection capabilities were a major differentiator for us. We also had a lot more confidence in SimpliVity’s underlying hardware platform compared to the competitive product.”
SimpliVity OmniCube provides a scalable, modular, 2U building block of x86 resources that offers all the functionality of traditional IT infrastructure—in a single device, with a unified administrative interface. “By avoiding physical servers, storage devices and backup appliances the SimpliVity solution has helped us save about $250,000 in CAPEX as we’ve scaled out our environment and rolled out new applications,” explains Muth.
Worth implemented a geographically distributed OmniCube configuration for ultimate data protection and resiliency. The firm replaced three equipment racks of legacy gear with three 2U SimpliVity OmniCube CN-3000 nodes in its Pennsylvania data center. The redundant configuration ensures continuous availability in the event of hardware failures or application mishaps. Three additional OmniCubes are deployed in a separate data center in Delaware for disaster recovery.
SimpliVity’s ultra-efficient data backup and recovery capabilities help safeguard business-critical applications and IT services. “When our production systems were hit with the CryptoWall virus we were able to restore all of our critical applications to a known working state within a matter of hours, minimizing the impact on the business,” explains Muth. “With our previous implementation some of our apps would have been out of commission for days.”
SimpliVity’s VM-centric administration dramatically simplifies operations, freeing up IT staff for innovation. A single system administrator oversees the entire operation using the familiar VMware vCenter console. “With SimpliVity we can spin up new application environments in just minutes to better respond to the needs of the business,” says Muth. With our old implementation it would take days or even weeks to rack, stack and configure equipment.”
